Long ago, when dragons that spit lasers roamed the lands, Steve Perry rode pterodactyls made of knives through righteous lightning storms, and Nebraska wasn’t a laughable football program, two brothers were immaculately conceived in an 81 Datsun in the shadow of Sanford Stadium with one destiny: to return football commentary to its old form; obsessive, cruel, full of errors, and substance abuse and dick jokes. And there's John who's a Miami fan, so we were surprised he could even spell.

Mercy Lord what happened to TCU? These guys were a BCS contender and they got stomped out of their own stadium by a bunch of Mormons? This was not a squeaker by any means, and though I only halfway called it (saying these small conference non-BCS schools inevitably lose one they shouldn't taking them out of the running, but still picking TCU anyway) it was still surprising.

Auburn and Carolina. Man oh man did Auburn get a scare here. If South Carolina takes advantage of the opportunities early, and Tuberville doesn't try that ballsy onside kick in the 3rd quarter, Carolina would have taken this one. The #2 team in the country shouldn't have had the game come down to a 4th & 1 inside their own 10 to walk away from this one. The Carolina defense exposed Auburn as being too one dimensional, and looking at the last two games I've seen Auburn play, that quarterback doesn't understand the concept of getting rid of the ball. He takes too many crushing sacks that put the offense in impossible situations because they're not built to handle having to take huge chunks of yardage at a time. Kenny Irons is sometimes spectacular, sometimes maddening to watch. He lacks the consistency of a great back, but he can still gash you and give you a miserble day. On the South Carolina side, where the hell did this QB come from? What happened to Smelley? Blake Mitchell is apparently in Spurrier's doghouse and will likely be carrying a clipboard the rest of his time at Carolina, but I thought Smelley was the future of the team, and he didn't even take a snap last night. This new guy has what I call "Bryan Randall" syndrome, after the former Virginia Tech QB of the same name where he's very mobile and can kill you with his feet, but if you need a touch pass or any big-time pass, he can't get the ball 10 yards near the receiver. This Carolina kid is a little better than that, but he made some atrocious throws, and was the victim of some horrific drops (that tight end was WIDE FUCKING OPEN in the end zone, and it BOUNCED OFF HIS FUCKING HANDS). In the end, I hope a lot of teams taped that game, because some of Auburn's weaknesses really leaked out, and I get to brag that I called it (spread was Auburn -14 and took Auburn for the win and SC for the cover).

So on the day, I split the two pride games. I guess I could have flipped a coin and gotten the same result, in theory. If I start tanking it, look for "quarter picks" where I'll just flip a coin for each choice and see how it comes out. Heads I take the favorite, tails the dog. I have a sick feeling those days are coming soon.

Man.....MAN. I mean I NEVER root for Spurrier. EVER! And I was screaming at the top of my lungs last night. 4th and 1 and you toss it to the back of the endzone? Man with 24 seconds left that's just enough time to sneak for the first, which stops the clock until they reset and then spike it giving you 3 downs and around 19 seconds to make a couple 3 yard quick pass attempts into the endzone. Don't know if I agree with ol' Spurrier's genius plan at the end but that's just a case of the Monday Morning Quarterbacks i'm sure. What the hell is up with shitty teams coming out with qbs noones heard of and scaring top 10's (cough, Colorado cough cough)?? I know you gotta give the credit to the new kid but damn does that make our SC shutout look better and better. I feel funny.

I agree about the shitty playcalling at the end. I have no idea why he threw the fade when there was obviously a blitz coming, so he wouldn't have time to get a good read on where to put it. Plus, that's the same play that ended their first long drive in the first quarter that got intercepted. They'd been picking on #38 on the Auburn defense all game long, I'm not sure why they went away from that in that critical situation. I totally agree a sneak on 4th and 1 with that QB's size and speed was the call to make, and if it's close, you get the extra time from the official's timeout for the measurement to draw up a couple of plays to get in the end zone. 3 chances sounds better than 1 to me, but I majored in English so what the hell do I know.

I'm wondering if that will cost Auburn their #2 spot. USC is on the road at Washington State, and if they win big, I think they pass Auburn in the standings, and I think deservedly so. That game was winnable for South Carolina last night, but they blew a few key chances and Tuberville gambled with the surprise onside kick that led to another Auburn score. All the SC fans in America have got to be shaking their heads right now and just saying "what if?"
